Only a few weeks later, the news began to creep into Finland. Newspapers wrote about home searches in Estonia. People had been fired from their jobs and interrogated. But no one talked about the whys and the wherefores, nor about the letter and its content.

Sometimes Kaisa wondered where the Iron Curtain actually ended—but she, like Aivar, had her own life to live. There was nothing she could do to fix it, so it was no use bothering yourself with it.

The only thing that bothered her somewhat was that Aivar hadn't called her for a while.

Then, one evening, when she came home from work, she saw a stack of letters on the foyer table, where Meeri must have put them. Now that she had paid the farrier's bills and the other expenses that had piled up, the stack was considerably smaller, no longer a pile at all.

One of them caught her attention, sending her heart thrumming in her chest.

The stamp told her that the letter had come from Estonia and that it had been on the road for two weeks.

The envelope itself was simple. It read,

Kaisa

Itsenäisyydenkatu 8 a 20, 33500

Suomi, Soome.

No last name.

Fingers trembling, she tore the letter open. The message was short and unsigned, but Kaisa recognised Aivar's handwriting:

They have cut off telephone links to Finland. I'll call you when I can.
